WHO WE ARE

The California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative was formed in 2005 out of a growing concern for the health, safety and rights of nail salon and cosmetology workforce. We address reproductive and environmental justice and health issues facing the community through outreach and leadership development, policy, research and movement building

  • Collaborative is working on AB 1575 to protect beauty salon workers

    Following last year’s progress in advancing statewide legislation to uplift the nail salon workforce, we’ve embarked on a very ambitious challenge this year. The Collaborative along with Black Women for Wellness,  Californians for a Healthy & Green Economy (CHANGE), and Women’s Voices of the Earth are working with Assemblymember Ash Kalra on AB 1575, which calls for ingredient labeling on all professional hair and nail cosmetics and products. With labeling the goal is that workers, owners and consumers can make informed choices about the products they use. Sign this petition

  • Microloans for Nail Salons

    The Collab is partnering with the EPA to pilot a microloan program for nail salons THAT want to achieve “Healthy Nail Salon” status. In partnership with Asian Health Services, Working Solutions, Opportunity Fund, the Federal Reserve Bank, and Alameda, San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, we will be implementing this program that allows nail salons to receive 0% loans to purchase safer, less toxic nail products and ventilation equipment.

  • The Importance of Engaging Voters

    In 2016, we made sure that eligible voters exercised their right to vote. This was the first year that the Collaborative focused on voter engagement efforts with nail salon and Vietnamese community members in San Jose. We called 4,300 households, knocked on 1,200 doors, and visited 170 nail salons. Our nail salon worker members, Collaborative partners and student volunteers spoke to over 1,100 registered Vietnamese voters and reminded them to vote. We collected hundreds of surveys and pledge cards that resulted in the recruitment of 500 additional supporters of our movement.

  • 2016 Annual Nail Salon Community Celebration

    In November 2016, over 250 nail salon community members, nonprofit partner organizations, and government agencies attended our annual nail salon community celebration in San Jose! We recognized our legislative champions and leaders Supervisor Cindy Chavez, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez, and Assemblymember David Chiu for their work in supporting nail salon worker health and safety.  We also honored community champions who have been exceptional role models in the nail salon community.
